It is no problem to perform minor maintenance or even replacement and repair jobs on you automobile in your driveway. With the explosion of small auto parts stores with large inventories there is no reason to overpay a mechanic to change a headlight or rotate your tires. In truth, most repair jobs do not require special tools or more skill than it takes to turn a socket wrench. The work is hot and dirty and there are sharp things to watch out for, but at the end of the day, it is worth it. The feeling of confidence you get when you know you can fix your own car is priceless.
Parts stores are not just places you go to pick up a part and leave. For the do it yourself auto mechanic they can prove an invaluable resource. The sales staff is paid to be knowledgeable. Their duties go beyond just going to the back and grabbing the appropriate part. They are there to answer any questions you might have about performance and installation. By repairing and maintaining your car yourself, you will not only save money but gain a sense of pride and accomplishment every time you look at your car. However, you will lose one thing.
